DELAND -- The Volusia County
Sheriff’s Office is investigating a home invasion robbery near DeLand
that happened early Wednesday morning. Two women were the only people in the
home when a gun-wielding man woke one of them to demand jewelry and cash. The
other woman slept undisturbed in a separate room throughout the incident. The
suspect grabbed some jewelry and then fled. There were no shots fired and no
one was injured.
The robbery happened at 408 Albany Ave. and
was reported at 5:52 a.m. The victim told deputies that she was asleep in her
bedroom when a young man dressed all in dark clothing woke her up. It’s
believed that he got in through a bathroom window that had been left partially
open. He displayed a handgun and demanded to know where her jewelry and cash
was. The man then searched the room and grabbed the jewelry items he found.
Before fleeing, he forced the victim into a closet and warned her not to follow
him.
The suspect was described
as a light-skinned black man in his twenties with a medium build, wearing dark
pants and a dark, hooded sweatshirt. Anyone with information about the robbery
is asked to call Amy Smith at (386) 943-7866 or Crime Stoppers of Northeast
Florida, toll-free, at (888) 277-TIPS. Tipsters can also provide information by
texting “TIP231 plus the message” to CRIMES. Anyone who provides
information to Crime Stoppers will remain anonymous and can qualify for a
reward of up to $1,000.
