Baby Swallows Oxycodone - Woman Arrested

Volusia County Sheriff’s investigators charged a Deltona woman on Thursday with child neglect when a 1-year-old boy in her care fell sick after ingesting two of the woman’s Oxycodone pills. Investigators filed three felony counts of child neglect against 31-year-old Chanda McRae -- one count for the child who ate the prescription pills and two additional charges for the two other children in McRae’s care at the time of the incident.

Late Thursday morning, McRae decided to drive the 1-year-old to the hospital after she noticed that he looked odd and appeared to be in a daze. However, while on the way, the child’s breathing became erratic and McRae stopped at a fire station on Howland Boulevard to seek help. Paramedics administered a drug that’s used to counter the effects of narcotics in the system.

Then the child was taken by EVAC ambulance to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City, where the child tested positive for the presence of opiates. He was later transferred to Florida Hospital Orlando for additional treatment.

Meanwhile, officials went to McRae’s house on Altoona Lane to continue the investigation. It was there that they found McRae’s Oxycodone prescription. According to witnesses, the child climbed onto McRae’s dresser and ate two pills he found on top of it. McRae also was caring for two other boys, ages 3 and 4, at the time.

She was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday night on $6,000 bond.
