BURGLAR NABBED AFTER STRING OF BAD LUCK

According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, an Ormond Beach man’s burglary attempts on Saturday could hardly have gone worse. Peter Studley was caught in the act twice, bled on one of the crime scenes and was also captured on a surveillance camera.

The defendant’s foibles quickly led to his capture by Volusia County Sheriff’s deputies, who charged the 52-year-old Studley with grand theft, two counts of burglary and two counts of criminal mischief.

First, Studley broke into the manager’s room at the Vanguard Motel on South Yonge Street near Ormond Beach. He was busy stealing money and ransacking the room for jewelry and other valuables when the manager walked in on him.

The victim immediately recognized Studley because he had been staying at the motel for the past month. Studley bolted for the window, but the manager grabbed his legs and tried to prevent him from climbing out. Studley, however, managed to break free and scrambled out of the window to look for his next target.

He found it moments later in a work van parked outside a cabinet business on South Yonge Street. Studley allegedly broke in to the vehicle, but before he could steal anything, he fled the scene when the owner drove up. The window to the van had been smashed, and deputies noted blood droplets on the vehicle.

A little less than two hours after the burglaries were reported to the Sheriff’s Office, a deputy spotted Studley at about 1:03 p.m. walking along Ridgewood Avenue and took him into custody. Studley was sporting fresh lacerations to both arms and his right leg. He also had money and jewelry on him that was taken during the motel burglary. Deputies also retrieved additional evidence against Studley -- surveillance video showing him breaking into the van.

Studley is being held at the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach on $10,000 bond.
