Volusia County
Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 20-year-old worker on Wednesday after she
was accused of shoving a developmentally disabled adult to the ground. The
51-year-old victim, a client at the Eagle Watch Cluster assisted living
facility near Daytona Beach,
tumbled to the ground and sustained a fractured shoulder and large contusion on
his arm. The injuries went untreated for three days because the worker, Breonna
Isaac, failed to report the incident to her bosses and the victim is unable to
verbally communicate. On Wednesday, the Sheriff’s Office charged Isaac
with aggravated abuse of a disabled adult.
The injury occurred at
the facility on Dec. 15. Isaac initially told a co-worker that the victim had
fallen. The co-worker said she told Isaac to report the accident, but she
didn’t. Three days later, on Sunday, the victim’s injuries were
discovered and he was taken to Florida
Hospital Memorial
Medical Center
in Daytona Beach
for treatment. On Monday, a remorseful Isaac confided in a co-worker that she
pushed the victim because he had gotten on her nerves. The co-worker reported
Isaac’s disclosure to administrators, who immediately launched an internal
investigation. They also reported the incident to the Florida Department of
Children & Families. On Tuesday, Isaac -- who has been suspended from her
job -- delivered a two-page letter to the facility admitting what she did and
expressing regret for her actions.
The facility contacted
the Sheriff’s Office Wednesday afternoon, and deputies arrested Isaac
after interviewing her and two of her co-workers. She was booked into the
Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona
Beach at 10 p.m. Wednesday night and has since been
released after posting $1,500 bond.
