Road Rage On I-95

According to Volusia County Sheriff's deputies, a road rage incident that started on northbound I-95 wound up with two men wrestling on the side of an off-ramp near Ormond Beach early Thursday morning. Volusia County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the intersection of U.S. Hwy 1 and the Interstate off-ramp when several witnesses called 911 to report the brawl. A 47-year-old Palm Beach man was arrested and charged with battery and criminal mischief.

At approximately 5:26 a.m. several people called 911 to report that two men were fighting on the side of a road at a red light. “They’re really fighting, man,” one caller said. “You better get somebody here. They’re going to hurt one another.”

When deputies arrived and separated the men they learned that William Chestnut was driving on northbound I-95 when another vehicle cut him off. Feeling enraged, he followed the offending pickup truck until it finally exited the Interstate. When the truck stopped at a red light, Chestnut got out of his vehicle, walked up to the driver’s side of the truck and punched the side mirror, breaking it.

The pickup driver, who is a 40-year-old Jacksonville resident, jumped out and the two men fought until the pickup driver was able to wrestle Chestnut to the ground and hold him until help arrived.

Chestnut was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach without further incident.
